Adjusting individual glyph positions (metrics)

  • administrators

Sometimes it is necessary to adjust the positioning (metrics) of a glyph because of the styling being used, to meet the demands of a designer or where a custom image has been defined for a glyph.

To make these changes, switch to the Preview View and add text that displays the glyphs you want to align. It's often a good idea check the Show Guides check box making it easier to line the glyphs up.

Once you have the glyphs displayed on the Preview canvas you can select the glyph you want to adjust and simply use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the glyph up, down, left and right. By default the arrow keys will move the glyph 1 pixel at a time. If you hold down Shift then the glyph is moved 10 pixels at a time.

In the screen show below we have also zoomed up to see more detail making alignment easier .

As you can see from the screen shot above, details of the adjustments being made to a glyph can be seen in the metrics tab in the right hand panel. These values can also be changed causing the glyph to move.
