Whats going on when I get the "Corruption Detected" message?

A few weeks ago when I tried to process an image I got a "Corruption Detected" message while using the fast CPU. Normal CPU was fine. When I saw this I freaked out and thought something was wrong with my computer and put it through a long suite of diagnostics which it passed just fine.
Tonight I tried a movie for the first time. Fast or slow CPU it didn't matter - "Corruption Detected." GPU is fine.
What's going on?

There's more to this.
After a couple of hours trying to process the movie using GPU my entire computer crashed.
Would be nice to have a clue as to what's going on.
